Market Garden Assistant Manager
The applicant should have multiple years experience in vegetable production and be familiar with the seasonal workloads, responsibilities and expectations of a high quality market gardener. Applicant should be ready and excited for physically labor and ability to lift 50 pounds safely and consistently. Other qualifications include reliability, good time management and communication, and being able to adapt to dynamic conditions.
Prior management experience is not necessary. We currently have three other farm managers, with others focuses, with well over a dozen years (combined) of market garden experience. This means the current Ararat Farm Team will assist the person in establishment within the position, walk through our current methodologies and practices and offer collaboration, guidance and support. On most of out established beds we are no-till but experience in this methodology is not necessary.
As the farm is only a few years back into commercial production, we still have plenty of room to grow, hone in on our practices, and refine our methodologies, so its an exciting time to join the team. Ideally we are looking for someone who wants to be involved for multiple years, with an increase in responsibility and autonomy as time passes.
We encourage applicants who will work well in a team environment, work well independently and be able to take the lead on their projects of concentration.
Primary responsibilities include
Field Crops: Seeding, transplanting, mulching, weeding, trellising, pruning,
Greenhouse work & plant propagation
Soil bed preparation and record keeping
Operation of small scale farm machinery
Management of field crew for garden tasks multiple times a week.
Internal communication and collaboration with existing Ararat Management Team
· Supplemental & Potential Responsibilities include:
Ability to help farm beyond market veggies (perennials, herbs, grains, misc.) when requested.
Operating heavy farm equipment
Marketing and Sales
Assisting harvest manager in harvesting, washing and packaging
Position starts in March. This position would be full-time with the possibility of year-round employment for the right person. Salaried position preferred, and compensation based upon experience and qualifications. Enjoy access to extra farm produce, products and prepared foods. Please check in about housing. Ideally this is a salaried position.
Harvest & Pack Station Assistant Manager
This position will have a lot of overlap and coordination with the market garden manager as well as the rest of our farm team. Prior farm work or restaurant work is helpful. We sell our produce through our farm stand, farmer’s markets, and to restaurants. The farm also employs a cook who makes prepared foods. Sometimes there are specific handling, harvesting and packaging protocols for each outlet. Attention to detail, good organization and good communication are important. About ½ of this position will take place in the fields either harvesting or assisting the market garden’s other needs and the other ½ in the packstation, cleaning, washing, sorting and packaging produce.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
Harvesting crops at appropriate times of day and maturity for freshness·
Management of harvest schedule and leading harvest crew
Washing, sorting, and packaging produce.
Refilling farm stand with produce and goods
Secondary & Potential Responsibilities
